One of our Alexandria residents has set up a petition to oppose the downgrading of the Fountain Street Woolworths supermarket to a Metro store. This means a loss of a larger stocked supermarket in the area & will be the 4th Metro store spread across Erskineville, Alexandria & Redfern.
There are already over 360 signatures in 2 days. Here’s the link below to sign for residents wishing to retain and improve the existing supermarket to service the Alexandria community and prevent paying higher prices in these times of inflation.
We understand that this transition is taking place in two weeks. Feel free to share this to spread the word.

If they downgrade it a Metro type Store like Erskineville Road or Mitchell Road I will shop elsewhere, I accidentally had my pick up location set to Woolworth’s Erskineville Road for my last order, around 30% was not available???, I wonder What the Idiot in Woolworth’s Management gets paid per year to make stupid depressions like this one?
Given that there is already a Metro store on Mitchell road and another on Erskineville What is the logic of downgrading the existing Fountain St Woolworths to a Metro format ?
Are they really keen for Coles or Aldi to move into the area and take away their business ?
I should have added that I would prefer to continue shopping at Fountain St as it is closer; however, if the range of goods is reduced I will stop shopping at Woolies entirely, and go elsewhere (e.g. IGA).
If the Fountain St store becomes a metro I will stop shopping at Woolworths and start shopping at the IGA at Newtown which has a pretty good range of products (certainly better than a metro store).
